In this Data Documentation and Metadata module, you will learn how to:

  • Distinguish between documentation and metadata in Research Data Management
  • Identify different types of metadata and suitable formats
  • Apply metadata effectively to your research data
  • Use vocabulary standards in your data documentation
  • Develop comprehensive data dictionaries or codebooks
  • Create useful README files to describe and document your research data

This module is flexible, with no time limits or grading. It is part of the ETH Domain Data Management Campus, which offers a comprehensive program of short modules designed to help researchers master key topics related to Open Research Data (ORD) and Research Data Management (RDM).

Simply start with the topics that interest you most and explore others to deepen your understanding of related areas.

All contents used for this and other modules are accessible and adaptable for reuse: they are published as Open Educational Resources (OER) on zenodo.org/communities/eth-domain-oer-rdm for anyone to integrate into their teaching or learning.
